My Favorite Outdoor Headshot Locations in Downtown Durham
Downtown Durham is one of my favorite places to photograph outdoor headshots. The mix of architecture, public art, and natural light creates images that feel polished, modern, and intentional without being overly staged. When clients want headshots that feel elevated but still authentic, these are two locations I return to again and again.
The Gold Doors at the Old Courthouse on Main Street
The gold doors in front of the old Durham County Courthouse on Main Street are a classic downtown Durham backdrop. The warm metallic tones reflect light beautifully and add an instant sense of sophistication to any headshot. This location works especially well for professionals, creatives, and anyone who wants images that feel confident, editorial, and timeless.
It’s one of those spots that elevates a portrait while still keeping the focus exactly where it should be — on the person.

Winding Out Sculpture on West Parrish Street
Another favorite outdoor headshot location in downtown Durham is Winding Out, a sculptural installation by artist Robert Winkler. Installed in 2014 and located at 101 West Parrish Street, this thirteen-and-a-half-foot cedar sculpture creates a striking backdrop with its spiraling form and natural wood texture.
What I love most about Winding Out is how the curves and lines add movement and depth without overwhelming the image. The way light and shadow interact with the sculpture throughout the day makes each session feel unique. This location is especially great for creatives, artists, and entrepreneurs who want headshots that feel modern, expressive, and a little less traditional.

Why Downtown Durham Works So Well for Outdoor Headshots
One of the biggest advantages of photographing headshots in downtown Durham is how walkable everything is. During a single session, we can move between locations like the courthouse and Winding Out while also taking advantage of tree-lined streets, open green spaces, and a mix of modern and historic buildings to create a wide variety of natural backdrops without changing neighborhoods or setups.
Outdoor headshots in downtown Durham offer a balance of professionalism, creativity, and personality, making them ideal for personal brands, updated headshots, and editorial-style portraits.
If you’re looking to book an outdoor headshot session in downtown Durham, I’d love to help you choose the locations that best fit your style and goals.
